Rays Partner with Parking Service, Increase Prices Again

After buying the then-Devil Rays, team president Matt Silverman abolished parking fees around Tropicana Field. The Devil Rays free parking continued throughout 2007. In 2008, the parking policy changed again.
The Rays go green at” carpool to Tropicana Field!! All vehicles with four or more passengers get FREE parking at all home games in 2008. For vehicles with fewer than four passengers, parking will cost $10. The Rays will also offer parking in remote lots for $5.
Since 2008, the price of parking has only gone up, and the carpooling advantage has been limited.

According to the Rays webpage, here is the current parking policy:
The Rays continue to provide carpoolers access to free parking in team-controlled lots.* In 2014, vehicles with four or more passengers may park free for all Sunday games. For all other games, the first 100 cars with four or more people park for free up to an hour before game time, with other main lot Tropicana Field parking rates ranging from $15 to $30 per vehicle.
From free to $10 in 2008 to $15 to $30 today. To park in lots that are no different than they were in 2006 and 2007. And the carpooling benefit has gone from everyday to only on Sundays and the first 100 other days.

Yesterday, the Rays made another change to their parking policy. According to the Tampa Bay Business Journal, the Rays have partnered with a third-party parking service called "Parking Panda". The article states Parking Panda is an app-driven service where fans can scan the Parking Panda-affiliated lots for the cheapest spot, then purchase a spot via Parking Panda at any time.

Presently, the only Tropicana Field lots associated with Parking Panda is Lot 4 and the price to park there is $21.50. (See picture below for Lot 4 location.)

According to Parking Panda CEO Bryan Lozano, “Parking is a natural pain point in all cities and I believe our biggest value is that we make it painless for residents, fans, and visitors through our technology,” he said.

Given the Rays attendance, where to park isn't the problem. What is the problem is that parking at Tropicana Field has continued to rise unabated since 2007. Locking in high rates around the stadium only gives license for surrounding third-party lots to increase their prices. Considering the cheapest Rays ticket is $15, parking doubles the cost of admission.

Will this cause more Rays fans to utilize the City of St. Pete's free trolley service that runs from the downtown parking garages to Tropicana Field?

Meanwhile, parking at Clearwater's Brighthouse Field is $2. Parking at both Dunedin's Auto Exchange Stadium and Tampa's Steinbrenner Field is free. And according to Yelp reviews, parking at Bradenton's McKechnie Field is $5.

First Universal Rain Check used at Dunedin Blue Jays game

I missed this last week, but still think it is worth discussing:

According to OurSportsCentral.com, on July 19th the Dunedin Blue Jays honored their first "Universal Rain Check" when a fan used a ticket to a rained out Lakeland Flying Tigers vs Daytona Cubs game at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

The "Universal Rain Check" program, instituted this season, allows "fans to redeem a ticket from any rained out game from another team in Minor League Baseball for a Dunedin Blue Jays game at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium". The Dunedin Blue Jays believe it is the first such program ever in Minor League Baseball.

As time progresses, there may be more opportunities for fans to take advantage of the Blue Jays offer.

So far this season, the Dunedin Blue Jays have been rained out three times. They have played two doubleheaders and one game has yet to be made up.

Meanwhile, the Bradenton Marauders have been rained out four times. They have played three doubleheaders and have one game postponed to be made up later this season.

The Tampa Yankees have been rained out once and have played one doubleheader.

The Clearwater Threshers haven't yet been rained out and of course neither have the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Universal Rain Check may become a very good program and bit of an attendance boost for the Dunedin Blue Jays.

Fangraphs Post: Attendance after ace pitchers are traded

I penned a post for Fangraphs.com yesterday on the impact of trading ace pitchers on attendance and winning percentage. According to my research, teams can fall into four different categories after trading their best pitcher:
  • Attendance can go down and winning percentage can go down
  • Attendance can go down and winning percentage can go up
  • Attendance can go up and winning percentage can go down
  • Attendance can go up and winning percentage can go up

While common thought is most teams would fall into the first category after trading an all-star pitcher, after researching 12 trades over the last 37 years, I found that wasn't as prevalent as I initially thought.

Included in my research is also the Scott Kazmir trade. While Kazmir wasn't an ace when he was shipped to the Angels, the Rays definitely saw an attendance and winning percentage change after the trade.

Check my article on Fangraphs to see how different teams did in the seats and in the win column and where I predict the Rays will be if they trade David Price.

Tampa Yankees Dante Bichette Jr calls out Dunedin Blue Jays attendance

In September 2010, Rays players Evan Longoria and David Price drew national attention when they commented on the lack of attendance at Tropicana Field. Whether they were right or wrong in their judgments, commenting on attendance is something players just shouldn't do.

Every night I search on twitter for tweets mentioning "Rays attendance". Usually at least one person in the baseball twittersphere makes a bad joke about the Rays fanbase. I usually provide them with facts and sometimes they follow or sometimes I roll in the mud with the pigs and get dirty. It's a fun exercise that usually challenges my grasp of the attendance situation.

Last night, however, I did a different search. I searched twitter for "FSL attendance". The search led me to an interesting comment.

Dante Bichette Jr is an third baseman for the Tampa Yankees. On July 7th, the Tampa Yankees visited the Dunedin Blue Jays. According to the Dunedin Blue Jays, paid attendance for that game was 702. The Rays also played that night, drawing 13,406 in James Shields' return to Tropicana Field.

Even worse, Dunedin outfielder Dwight Smith Jr didn't stand up for his own fan base and only commented "Hah".

Shame on Bichette and Smith. Being second generation professional baseball players, they should be more sensitive to their fanbases. Considering the home of the Dunedin Blue Jays, Florida Auto Exchange Stadium, is only 21.9 miles (33 minutes) from Steinbrenner Field, home of the Tampa Yankees, Bichette is criticizing the same metropolitan area he plays in.

Why a minor league baseball player would take to twitter to comment on attendance is beyond my comprehension. Especially one who grew up around stadiums and fans. Perhaps Dante Bichette Jr wasn't around when his father played in small towns such as Salem, Oregon; Davenport, Iowa; Midland, Texas; and Nashua, New Hampshire. Bichette Jr might also not realize that Dunedin, with a population of only 35,000 is one of the smallest towns in the nation hosting a minor league baseball team.

One day Dante Bichette Jr might make the Major Leagues. While he moves on to play in front of tens of thousands of fans, fans of the Florida State League will still be coming out to support the next generation of players. They will pay their good money to sit in seats and watch young ballplayers work to be the best in the world.

With a choice to see Major Leaguers play in Tropicana Field 21 miles to the south, Dante Bichette Jr and Dwight Smith Jr should be thankful for every fan, home or away, who comes to see them.

Local News Reports Youth Baseball is on the Decline

'Tis the season for baseball navel-gazing. While Bud Selig gave his annual "State of the Game" address at the All-Star Game (more on that later) and newspapers lamented the days of yore when kids watched their heroes through peepholes and played stickball in the street, there was an interesting report on the local Fox affiliate yesterday about the decline of youth enrollment in Tampa-area baseball leagues.

There is a line of thought that getting kids involved is essential to the success of a sport. There might be some truth to this, although millions watch MMA or boxing without ever getting into the ring. Same perhaps with football. But we will go with the idea that youth enrollment equals long-term fans and long-term fans equal future ticket and merchandise buyers. I think that is a fair assumption.

Three things came to mind as I watched the news report:

The lack of minorities at the UT Baseball Camp

According to a recent Harris poll, 42% of Hispanics, 37% of Whites, and 34% of African-Americans follow baseball. Most of the kids in the video were white or possibly Hispanic. I didn't see one African-American kid. That could be because of location, cost, or marketing. I have no idea.

The uncited little league

A local little league claims enrollment is down 20% over five years. This might be a big deal. Is that total for all ages? If it is for t-ball or the younger leagues, are parents not promoting baseball as a sport? If it is in the older leagues, age 8 and up, are kids leaving the little league system? Do they not want to play anymore? What is the retainment rate of area little leagues? Five years ago, the economy went downhill. Are parents not able to afford the leagues? Are parents too busy working to bring kids to games and practices? How much of the issue is the kids and how much is their environment?

So what?

What are coaches or marketing people doing about the lower rates? According to the report, enrollment at the UT Baseball Camp is fine. Instead of blaming the predicament on video games or cell phones or some other technological boogieman, what is the plan of action? Is there a plan of action? Are coaches or representatives going to schools, spreading the word, handing out flyers, etc? I'm sure many parents want their kids to be involved. Are coaches engaging parents to see what they need in regards to support to get kids to and from practices and games?

Sometimes all it takes is having a few kids play and other kids will join.

Last weekend, while driving through the Lake Magdalene area of Tampa, I saw a field of African-American kids playing baseball in the middle of the day. None of them had baseball gloves or uniforms, they were playing with a broomstick, and they were using a garbage pail as a backstop. I felt like stopping and playing an inning or two. Or at least buying them some bottles of water.

For whatever reason, baseball is popular target for naysayers. The sport is a multi-billion dollar industry that is no threat of dying out anytime this generation or the next. Yet the reports persist. Not to say more people shouldn't be ambassadors for the game and we shouldn't build more fields and facilities, but baseball is just fine.

Traveling Hot Dog Eater Visits Tampa Bay Baseball Parks

Every year a few brave souls go on a baseball pilgrimage through the backroads and highways of America. As is the wont these days, many of these baseball travelers chronicle their journey in a blog. In my days writing specifically about Minor League Baseball, I interviewed two bloggers: one doing it for the love of baseball, and the other taking to the road to sing the National Anthem in as many parks as possible.

During the summer of 2014, self-proclaimed environmentalist mountaineer, missileer, writer, adventurer and confirmed bachelor Tom Lehr is doing his own trek. But Lehr is a man on a baseball mission to determine which stadium has the best hot dog in baseball. He is visiting all 30 Major League parks and as many Minor League parks as possible. When finished, he hopes to publish his findings in his own book.

Over the weekend, Lehr made stops at Tropicana Field and McKechnie Field to taste their culinary wares.

On Friday, he picked up a free hot dog in Bradenton. According to Lehr, it was "one damn delicious dog". Through his mostly-subjective analysis, he gave the Marauders hot dog a 49 on his 1-60 scale. Not bad, and about in the middle of his rankings.

On Saturday, Lehr visited Tropicana Field. While his analysis of the experience was riddled in errors, I'm not going to poke holes in his journal. Many traveling writers have little time to write before hitting the road again. Fatigue, cynicism, and general road weariness tend to jade their outlook and Tropicana Field is an easy target for those not familiar with the situation. Enough said there.

In regards to the hot dog however, Lehr had one major gripe. According to his write-up, the lower level hot dog vendor stand was much better supplied than the hot dog vendors in the 300 level. Lehr compared this to "class warfare". His quest for the perfect hot dog was stymied by his inability to get similar toppings in the upper deck. He also claims when he asked Rays personnel about the issue, none had a satisfactory answer why he couldn't get the same hot dog toppings as the folks in the lower level. His frustration with the toppings and disappointment in Tropicana Field led him to give the Rays dog a paltry 38.

I am always curious what people think of baseball in the Tampa Bay area. While some leave with changed opinions of Tropicana Field, or are impressed by the facilities in Clearwater, Bradenton, Dunedin, or Tampa, every once in a while there are some who walk away disappointed. Lehr seemed impressed with McKechnie Field, but Tropicana Field left a bad taste in his mouth.

Interviewed by Blue Jays blog Bluebird Banter

A few days ago, I had the pleasure of answering a few questions from Blue Jays blog Bluebird Banter. Tom Dakers of their site runs a feature called "View from the other side", where he talks to bloggers from teams the Blue Jays are about to play.

With the Jays about to visit Tropicana Field, Tom sent me a few questions on the Rays attendance, the Tampa Bay market, some of the factors influencing attendance, and how the Dunedin Blue Jays are faring attendance-wise.

Please check out the interview. I like to think it turned out pretty good.

Fantastic video of Al Lang Field in 1947

While perusing the YouTubes, I found this gem - a video on the opening of Al Lang Field in 1947. According to AlLangBaseball.com
"Al Lang Field opened in 1947 when a sell-out spring training crowd of 7,706 saw the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Yankees and Stan Musial hit the first home run out of the park and on to Beach Drive"

There is so much baseball history in this video: Honus Wagner, Joe DiMaggio, Dom DiMaggio, Joe Garagiola, and two former commissioners (Happy Chandler and Ford Frick). Also making appearances are Grantland Rice, the man the Grantland website is named for, and of course, former St. Petersburg mayor Al Lang.

And how about that Ted Williams home run?
