The Rays need to cut ties with Barstool Sports

In the middle of the 2016 baseball season, Fox Sports reporter Emily Austen made an appearance on a Barstool Sports videocast. In the videocast, Austen said several offensive comments. Although Barstool tried to protect her and delete the video, her comments were live and cost her her job at Fox Sports and left the Rays without a sideline reporter for the rest of 2016.

This season, the Rays organization has become more active on social media. By and large, this has been a good effort. But in May, the Rays got into a tiff with Barstool JJ, a Barstool writer who covers the Yankees. Who reached out to who first is up for dispute - the Rays tweeted that JJ reached out first, JJ tweeted that the Rays reached out to him first. JJ's shtick is food reviews, and his food review at Tropicana Field was enjoyable. But JJ's comments on twitter have proven to be troublesome for the Rays and Rays fans.

And more recently, after a provoked attack by a troll account with 3 followers:

Early last week, I had a brief conversation with the Rays social media director. I expressed my disappointment with the Rays reaching out to social media personalities who have not been friendly to the Rays, Rays fans, or Tropicana Field. He thanked me for my thoughts and said it was part of an effort to get the brand out there.

Understandable, if the brand is portrayed correctly and positively.

Two days after our conversation, Rays third baseman Evan Longoria appeared on a Barstool videocast with platform founder Dave Portnoy. In another food review video, Longoria and Portnoy reviewed a NY City pizza place. Again, the food review was good, but Portnoy's comments about the Rays were questionable at best. Three times in the opening minutes, Portnoy deliberately called the Rays the "Devil Rays". He even did it after Longoria corrected him, stating "They will always be the Devil Rays."

Years ago, the Rays would write letters to bloggers to inform them of their name change. They even encouraged a $1 donation to charity for every mention. That was 9 years ago. For a media personality to still use "Devil Rays" in front of Rays player is disrespectful to the team, the player, and completely counter to getting the brand out there the right way.

This is not an attack on Barstool itself. I've been in the sports blogging scene for over 10 years. I've been linked on The Big Lead and on Deadspin and even wrote a cameo post for Deadspin. (I even had a mini beef with Deadspin about their treatment of Rays fans in 2008.). I know bro-tastic, chauvinistic, dude-culture, slightly sexist websites will always exist. Barstool has it's niche, just like Maxim, FHM, Stuff, and thousands of other media outlets that have come and gone catering to the dorm room, barracks, guys' locker room, 16-24 male demographic. Personally, I am over 30, so my bro-culture days are behind me. But there is an audience and they spend money or view pages or click ads or whatever Barstool needs to survive.

Coincidentally, on the same day Evan Longoria was on Barstool giving his opinion on pizza, Barstool featured the beach pictures of a USF student named Taylor. While Longoria was asked his thoughts, Taylor wasn't. Is she a Rays fan? What does she think of the team? What does she think of USF Football? Those opinions probably don't matter for Barstool's target audience.

But again, this is not an attack on Barstool's business model. It is critique of the Rays and the organization's ongoing cooperation with Barstool. I have been told that since getting capital investment from The Chernin Group, Barstool has attempted to clean up their media platform. It is a classic case of morals following money, but that's life online. However, Barstool and the people affiliated with them will always be who they are. And who they are is not a media platform a sports organization trying to grow an inclusive and diverse fanbase should be affiliated with in any way, shape, or form.

Welcome to our third monthly review of the Tampa Rays 2017 attendance. This post will look at attendance in games played from June 6, 2017 to June 25, 2017.
  • Total June 2017 Tampa Bay Rays home attendance: 186,327

  • Total Tampa Bay Minor League June attendance: 65,043
  • Tampa Bay Minor League attendance per game: 1,327 (49 games)

Comparing June 2017 with previous years

The following chart compares June 2017 average attendance to other recent years.

The average June 2017 attendance decreased 12% (2,182 less fans per game) than the June 2016 per game average. In the last 11 years, only 2015, 2014, and 2007 saw lower May average attendance.

Note: if you remove the Pride Night sell out of 2016, the Rays June 2016 average was 15,840. I don't usually like removing data without inserting another average, but we have to recognize June 2016 did feature a spike in attendance due to abnormal circumstances.

Weekdays vs Weekends

Let’s now look at the Rays June attendance on weekdays (Mon-Thurs) and weekends (Fri-Sun). As I have pointed out many times, the Rays usually have one of the biggest differences in Major League Baseball in regards to weekday versus weekend attendance.

June 2017 breakdown:
  • Weekday home games: 6
  • Weekend home games: 7

(Note: the Rays played 7 weekend games, but the first game of the June 10 doubleheader does not count towards attendance.)

This chart shows the Rays average weekday attendance in June since 2007.

Weekday June attendance in 2017 decreased an average of 1,151 fans per game, giving the Rays their 3rd lowest weekday June average since 2007. The Rays had 2 games with attendance less than 10,000 tickets sold.

The following chart shows Rays average weekend attendance in June since 2007.

The Rays June weekend average attendance was the 3rd lowest it has been in 11 years.

Conclusion

Rays average attendance increased from May to June as usual.

Jameis finally throws out the first pitch at the Trop

I've been tough on Jameis Winston on this blog. I've called his support for the Yankees and lack of support for the Rays a huge weak link in the #TeamTampaBay concept. I ripped him for throwing out a first pitch for a Yankees spring training game. I wrote about other Bucs draft picks who immediately after signing threw out first pitches for the Rays while Jameis was mysteriously absent.

I'm glad to lay this to rest.

Jameis is a Yankees fan. He will continue to be seen at Steinbrenner Field and he will continue to idolize Derek Jeter. He will continue to wear Yankees hats in public, including to Orlando Magic games.

But it was good to see Jameis finally throwing out the first pitch at Tropicana Field Sunday. Although it wasn't without reason, as he was part of the Chop in the Trop FSU-themed promotion, it was good to finally break the ice.

Jameis's support of the Rays is still suspect. Are we to believe he is a fan of the Rays, especially as the Yankees are now improving? Or is Jameis a front-runner, only supporting the Rays because they are ahead of the Yankees in the standings? This is the first time in Jameis's time in Tampa Bay that the Rays are better than the Yankees.

Regardless of his motivations, or regardless of how much the Seminole Boosters had to cajole him into appearing in front of the Seminole faithful, it was good to see Jameis finally on the mound at Tropicana Field.

Perhaps now he will be a supporting member of #TeamTampaBay.

Steven Wine writes a lazy article on Florida baseball

Nothing is worse in writing than lazy writing.

(A close second is one-sentence paragraphs.)

Lazy writing does little to help public discourse. News articles should help mold and inform public discourse. When writers are lazy, the public is fed lazy facts, then the public speaks lazy facts, and our societal discourse is hijacked by people who have little to no idea what they are talking about. Lazy writing is a scourge that better, more educated writers should push back on whenever possible.

With the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Miami last week, the subject of Marlins attendance was in the news. Like the Rays, the Marlins have attendance problems.

There are several differences between the Rays and Marlins situations. The Marlins play in a much nicer, new ballpark. Marlins fans hate their owner, who is consistently rated as the worst in baseball. The Rays, on the other hand, have a problem with stadium location. Neither of these mean that Major League baseball cannot survive in Florida.

But that didn't stop Associated Press writer Steven Wine from writing a hack piece on whether or not baseball "belongs in Florida". Being that it was the Associated Press, the article was picked up far and wide, from sports blogs to national newspapers.

I can't put out that many fires.

My biggest complaint with Wine's article, and so many like it, is that they almost always interview the wrong people. Wine interviewed Joe Maddon, Don Mattingly, Jeff Conine, Logan Morrison, and Mike Lowell. All players or managers. Not one regional business or marketing person in an article about the business of baseball in a region. Not even someone from a local tourist board or sports commission.

That's like asking a cook why people don't come to a restaurant. Yes, if the food sucks, the cook could probably take a good guess, but if the food is good and no one patronizes the establishment, is the cook really the best source? Or would you interview the owner or marketing head? Or someone who studies the local economy?

And how many other business articles start with the premise that the business shouldn't be there? Typically business cases try to solve the problem, not advocate the business giving up and leaving town.

Wine also makes several generic claims without providing any statistical evidence:
  • Like the Marlins, the Rays are ... battling the kind of chronic fan apathy that has plagued both franchises
  • the failure of the Rays and Marlins to develop a robust fan base
  • Many spectators who do show up care more about the visitors — even if that means booing them.
  • One issue is the transient nature of the state, which makes it different from markets where fan support goes back generations.

While these are often said, there is no empirical evidence in the article to prove any of these statements. He passes them off as fact. I've written in depth about most of these topics. Did Wine reach out? Of course not. He merely stuck to the rivers and the lakes he was used to.

Then there is this garbage line:
Theories might outnumber empty seats.
This is lazy to the point of ignorant. This is admitting he didn't want to do the research necessary for a good article. The theories don't outnumber seats. The Rays face four problems:
  • stadium location
  • old, out-of-date stadium
  • demographics
  • market saturation
They don't all have the same impact, but they all have an impact.

Had Wine googled "Rays attendance", he might have found my site. Its usually the second result behind ESPN's MLB attendance page.

I guarantee Steven Wine got paid for his article. That's a shame. If he submitted it for a grade, any business professor would have asked him to re-write it due to bad sources and lack of research. Writing about the successful growth or lack thereof of a fanbase is a sports business issue. But when you are lazy, you interview baseball players and managers, do little research, recycle theories without fact, and fail to write the best article possible.

Rays store in Tampa closing, ideas where to move to

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the Rays' lease in their downtown Tampa merchandise store is not being renewed. Friday will be the last day the store will be open, as the landlord of the building is renovating the plaza and the store will no longer have the space to operate.

Contrary to the gloom and doom and lazy conclusions that this means the future of the franchise in Tampa Bay is in doubt, closing the Rays downtown Tampa merch store is not a bad thing. As a matter of fact, it allows for increased marketing and fanbase growth.

The Rays downtown Tampa store opened in August 2007, when the Rays were still the Devil Rays and awareness of the brand was low. The merch store was seen as a way to increase visibility across the bridge and let people in Tampa easily buy and interact with Rays products.

The team is leaving the Park Tower building with awareness at an all-time high and the team gaining momentum towards their seventh winning season in the last 10 years. People are aware of the brand and root for the brand, even if they don't see the product in person regularly.

Which is why the Rays would be best to move the store further from Tropicana Field. The Rays should bring their store to the areas of Tampa, Hillsborough County, and beyond that don't frequent Tropicana Field due to traffic and distance. There the Rays have a chance to start over with a new store connecting to fans in new ways.

The first area I would look at for a new location would be near the University of South Florida, perhaps in or near the University Mall. With redevelopment of the mall property coming soon, the Rays could get in the location early, using it to spread awareness and products to college-age fans and perhaps increasing a partnership with USF. Another benefit is a Rays store near USF could also cater to lower income parts of Tampa. These areas aren't massive ticket buyers, but may buy hats and shirts if the store was in their backyard. A third benefit would be the use of several sports bars in this area for game watching events.

The second area the Rays should consider is New Tampa. Located east of I-75 and north of USF, driving from New Tampa to Tropicana Field for a weekday evening game takes at least an hour and half. According to wikipedia, there are 22,000 people in this growing and developing area. There are also large corporate headquarters such as USAA in the area. New Tampa is middle class housing developments and big box stores. A Rays store here would increase awareness and keep the Rays in mind of fans who, despite still being in Hillsborough County, are closer to the Orlando Magic than the Tampa Bay Rays.

A third option for the Rays would be Wesley Chapel. Wesley Chapel is north of Tampa, just across the county line in Pasco County. According to wikipedia, there are 44,000 people in Wesley Chapel. According to Google Maps, they are 42 miles from Tropicana Field. Depending on traffic, leaving Wesley Chapel at 5pm may mean a 2 hour drive to St. Petersburg to see the Rays. The Rays need to tap into the estimated $75,000 per capita income of Wesley Chapel. With Tropicana Field too difficult to move, moving the Rays store to the area is the next best option.

Each of these locations could host a Rays bus for group travel to the Trop. Two hour drives go easier with occasional hosts such as Stu Sternberg or Fred McGriff doing a Q&A with bus riders. They have an opportunity to make the trip a fun experience.

In 2007, downtown Tampa was devoid of Rays fans. The Rays merch store was a way to stake a claim in a new frontier. Now, with the store being forced to move and Tampa fully ensconced in Rays fandom, the team should jump the merch store further into uncharted territory.

Belmont Heights Little League alumni play softball

For a region relatively new to Major League Baseball, Tampa Bay has long been the home of many Major Leaguers. Several areas of Tampa, especially, have raised numerous professional baseball players. One of the most accomplished of these areas is Belmont Heights, defined according to Wikipedia as "roughly Southeast Seminole Heights(15th Street) to the west, Live Oaks Square (Hillsborough Avenue) to the north, Jackson Heights (30th Street) to the east, and V.M. Ybor and College Hill (21st Avenue)to the south."

This small area of Tampa has generated many Major Leaguers, most prominently Dwight Gooden, Gary Sheffield, Carl Everett, Derek Bell, Floyd Youmans, and Ty Griffin.

On Saturday, July 9th, many of these alumni, along with their childhood teammates met at USF to raise money for Belmont Height Little League. Of the above mentioned Little Leaguers, only Dwight Gooden was absent. Sheffield, Derek Bell, Carl Everett, and Ty Griffin were present.

The game was attended by roughly 300 or so fans, family, and neighbors. Many people in attendance knew the little league alumni playing, which gave the game a very family reunion-like feel. Prior to the game, there was a home run derby between the ex-Major Leaguers. The only player to hit the ball out of the park was Carl Everett, who won the derby with his one home run.

Unfortunately, the game only made it to the second inning before a lightning delay of over an hour. The game was moved from USF to the Belmont Height Little League fields to conclude.

Personally, I thought it was great seeing former MLB stars such as Sheffield paling with people he has known since he was kid. It made players such as Sheffield and Derek Bell, etc seem much more normal. And although they could hit the ball much further or throw it harder than their teammates, they were there for the same reason: to play a fun game of softball on a sunny Saturday and raise money for their local Little League.

Baseball has a long history in Tampa and the sport will continue to do well as long at the grassroots level as there is community support and involvement of former players providing opportunities for the next generation.

A letter from the Year 2030

It’s the Year 2030 and here at the Tampa Bay Regional Sports Commission (fictional), we find ourselves reflecting. Finding out, that, in fact, we never needed Major League Baseball. And yet Major League Baseball is always coming back.

Every spring, they come back. They were here before the Rays, and they are here after the Rays. We love our tourists and they bring in so much money, the gravy train was too good to get rid of. Even if we all knew a third of spring training attendance was local. What’s a few million diverted from the local ball club when the local economy earned hundreds of millions in tourist revenue?

The Rays tried. We’ll give them that. We knew eventually they would play Rule 52 – the territorial rule – against us. But the political clout of the Yankees both in Tampa and in Major League Baseball was too much. Rule 52 doesn’t cover spring training, and as long as George Steinbrenner’s name is on a high school in Tampa, we will always love our Yankees.

Regionally, the Rays were never part of hashtag “Team Tampa Bay”. Due to distance, they were our forgotten step child. Why do you think Jameis Winston never threw out the first pitch at a Rays game? Because he was a Yankees fan and never felt obligated to. And we never pushed him too.

If the local NFL quarterback didn’t buy in and couldn’t be convinced to root for the Rays, the whole idea of a Team Tampa Bay was bupkis. We knew it, but we marketed it anyway.

So the Rays left. Their fans yelled that Major League Baseball and our local politicians never really gave them a chance. And they might have a point. The Rays were surrounded on every side by cheaper, more convenient minor league teams. We’ll admit these teams drained the Rays of millions of dollars from hundreds of thousands of fans every year. Dollar hot dog night might not draw much, but over 20 years even the cost of cheapest hot dog adds up to a large amount of revenue lost. But you can’t have Spring Training without the Florida State League.

With the Rays gone, support to local Minor League Baseball has increased. From April to September, people now swim with the Threshers, fly with the Blue Jays, raid with the Marauders, and celebrate the legacy of the Yankees. The Threshers have often surpassed the former Florida State League attendance record, set in 1990 by the St. Pete Cardinals, ironically the original gauge for baseball support in St. Petersburg.

Here at the Tampa Bay Regional Sports Commission (fictional), we are happy about that.

Speaking of the Cardinals, in 2030 the St. Louis Cardinals made their triumphant return to St. Petersburg, where they trained from 1946 – 1997. They now play amidst the multiple condos and office buildings that sit where Tropicana Field once sat. It took three years to build the new complex and add a fifth spring training team in Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay is now a hub similar to Phoenix.

Unfortunately for the first year after the Rays left, Spring Training drew some very negative local attention. In 2028, Major League Baseball underestimated the response Tampa Bay fans would have to a team that left the region returning to the region to play exhibition games. When the Rays returned to play spring games against the Yankees, Phillies, and Blue Jays, the ex-Rays were booed mercilessly by upset former Rays fans. That year, outside each local stadium, fans protested ownership’s decision to move the team, and one very upset fan was even arrested for throwing a bottle at the ex-Rays’ bus.

Needless to say, attendance at the ex-Rays Port Charlotte spring training complex has the highest percentage of tourists of any spring training venue. Local fans want nothing to do with the team, and the Mayor of Port Charlotte had to turn down an invite to throw out a first pitch to an exhibition game due to the political repercussions.

If anything Rays-related has done well since 2027, it is Evan Longoria’s chain of restaurants. Decorated in Rays memorabilia, the former Rays star has cornered the market for mourning fans. After retiring in 2027 with 19 years only with the Rays. Longo never put on the uniform of another team. With that decision, he secured his legacy as Mr. Tampa Bay Ray. In 2033, he will be the eligible for the Hall of Fame and could be the only player with a chance to be inducted with a Rays hat.

Even without Major League Baseball, Tampa Bay continues to grow. Since the late 2010s, the area has become one of the hottest regions in the Southeast for jobs and economic development. Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik’s redevelopment of downtown was a success, new medical schools were built, and billion dollar construction projects were a completed or finally started – including the much needed rail, approved in 2022.

Will Major League Baseball ever return to Tampa Bay? We at the Tampa Bay Regional Sports Commission (fictional) don’t think so. While the region could support it now as it could since the economy recovered in the early 2010s, the insistence of local politicians that Spring Training and other regional developments were more important left the Rays with nowhere to go but out.

There is talk that Orlando – still the largest market in America without any baseball – may enter the bidding with Las Vegas, Charlotte, San Antonio, and Mexico City when baseball decides to expand again.

Here in Tampa Bay, baseball no longer leaves its fans to face the fall alone. We don’t look out windows waiting for baseball to come back.

Here at the Tampa Bay Regional Sports Commission (fictional), we’ve moved on.

My month at Fangraphs

During the month of June, I had the honor of participating in the Fangraphs.com residency program. This is a "guest writer" program held by one of the most widely-read baseball analysis sites. Their goal is to showcase writers they think are doing great work for smaller audiences and expose them on a grander scale.

I was honored to be selected and I hope I did a good job informing the Fangraphs audience about Tampa Bay baseball and the circumstances therein.

Here are links to my articles, please check them out.

Tampa Bay's Attendance Problem - an overview of the Rays attendance dilemma.

Tampa Bay and the Millennial Challenge - a look at how the next generation of fans will affect the Rays chances of staying in Tampa Bay

Can the Rays Ever Achieve League Average Attendance? - looking at the Rays as a small market team and how their attendance compares to other clubs their size

What the Rays Can (and Can't) Learn From Local Minor League Attendance - exploring trends in Tampa Bay's Minor League attendance and how much winning actually matters in each level of baseball

Tampa Bay's Second Half Attendance - predicting an increase in attendance for the Rays in the second half of 2017

Again, this was a lot of work, but very enjoyable. Thanks again to the folks at Fangraphs for providing me the opportunity.
