Tampa Bay population is growing

A few links of note from the Tampa Bay Business Journal:

According to a syndicated article in the Tampa Bay Business Journal, Tampa Bay is scheduled to break the 3 million mark in total population at some point in 2017. The Tampa-St Pete- Clearwater area is expected to grow 1.2% and near 3.07 million by year's end.

According to Wikipedia, Tampa-St Pete-Clearwater is the 18th largest metro area in the US. Even with the gain beyond the 3 million mark, the area will still trail San Diego's 3.3 million residents.

Assuming again that 50% of people are baseball fans, we can then assume 1.5 million baseball fans in Tampa Bay. If 50% of them are Rays fans, there will be 750,000 Rays fans in Tampa Bay. Likewise, if 15% of fans are Yankees fans, then 225,000 Tampa Bay residents will be pulling for the Yankees.

An increase in people could increase attendance or it could congest the roads so badly that fewer people travel to downtown St Pete to go to a Rays game. It could increase the workforce or it could be a drain on our social systems.

Tampa Bay is definitely a growing region. One with enough people and enough income to support Major League Baseball.

Rays and Yankees fans in Tampa Bay and distance to stadiums

During the last few weeks, I have analyzed Tampa Bay zip codes containing the most amounts of Rays and Yankees fans. I also looked at how far these zip codes are to Tropicana Field and Steinbrenner Field.

What I did not look at was the percentage of each teams' fans among baseball fans in respect to the distance from each stadium. Since not all zip codes have the same population, it is erroneous to use the total amount of fans to judge the impact of the team's location on the fanbase.

(Note: this entire post assumes baseball fans are 50% of the population. For example, if 50% of those fans are Rays fans, then 25% of the total population are Rays fans.)

A better measure is the percentage of population claiming to be fans of the respective team in that zip code.

Let's look first at the percentage of Yankees fans among baseball fans per zip code compared to proximity to Steinbrenner Field.

Again, most Yankees fans are within 30 miles of Steinbrenner Field. But there does not seem to be any correlation between proximity to Steinbrenner Field and Yankees fandom in the Tampa Bay area.

The two zip codes with the highest percentage of Yankees fans (21% of baseball fans) are 33615, 6.4 miles to Steinbrenner Field, and 34667, which is 40.7 miles from Steinbrenner Field.

Now let's look at the percentage of Rays fans by zip code.

While in most zip codes in Tampa Bay 45% or more of baseball fans are Rays fans, the only zip codes where close to or above 60% of baseball fans are Rays are within 10 miles of Tropicana Field.

That the three zip codes closest to Tropicana Field have the highest percentage of Rays fans is interesting. As I continue with zip code analyses, I am curious whether other zip codes in Pinellas County share a high percentage of Rays fans.

I wonder if most of Pinellas is near 60% and most of Hillsborough County is closer to 50% Rays fans among baseball fans.

Also interesting is that the three zip codes closest to the Trop (33702, 33712, 33710) have very low percentage of Yankees fans (6%, 9%, 8%, respectively).

There is still a lot of work to be done in regards to zip code analysis. Initial analysis however proves a link between closeness to the Rays stadium and a higher percentage of Rays fans and a lower percentage of Yankees fans.

Initial analysis also shows that proximity to Steinbrenner Field is not a strong factor in Yankee fandom in Tampa Bay. As I have mentioned before, the Yankees are a global brand and are popular everywhere.

Yankees fandom in Tampa Bay's top 25 most populated zip codes

Over the past year, I have explored many Tampa Bay area zip codes. I have looked at these regions by population, determining how many baseball fans live in each and how many of these fans are teams of what team. Then I determined how far each of these fans are to each of Tampa Bay's baseball stadiums.

This post is the second of several to combine zip code demographics and look for patterns and trends.

Again we will start with a list of the top 25 most populated zip codes in Tampa Bay per the 2010 census database on census.gov.

Of the top 25 most populated zip codes in Tampa Bay, 12 are in Hillsborough County, 5 are in Pinellas County, 5 are in Manatee County, and 3 are in Pasco County.

Now let's look at the amount of Yankees fans per zip code by using data from Facebook/New York Times. This is calculated by assuming 50% of the total population is baseball fans. For example, if 50% of Zip Code 33511 are baseball fans, and 20% of those are Yankees fans, then 5,200 people in zip code 33511 are Yankees fans.

The biggest difference is that the three St Petersburg zip codes in the first chart (33710, 33713, 33702) are not in the second chart. However, 5 more Hillsborough County zip codes are among the most populated with Yankees fans.

These 25 zip codes have a population of 909,553. The total amount of Yankees fans in these zip codes is 81,295, or 9% of the population. Now let's look at how far each of these Yankees fan-heavy zip codes are from Steinbrenner Field.

These zip codes average less than 21 miles from Steinbrenner Field. This is 7 miles closer than the 28 miles Rays-heavy zip codes were from Tropicana Field. So Tampa Bay area Yankees fans live closer to Steinbrenner Field than Tampa Bay area Rays fans live to Tropicana Field.

Now let's plot Yankees fans per distance. The following graph depicts the amount of Yankees fans per distance.

A few observations:

• The two zip codes with the most Yankees fans are under 30 miles from Steinbrenner Field.
• Proximity to Steinbrenner Field does not seem to have an effect on the amount of Yankees fans per zip code.
• Only 6 of the most Yankees-fan heavy zip codes are beyond 30 miles from Steinbrenner Field.
• Most Tampa Bay area Yankees fans live within 30 miles of Steinbrenner Field.

There are many Yankees fans in Tampa Bay. Many have moved into the area from New York. Others are children of Yankees fans. Yet others root for the Yankees as they have been spring training in Tampa since 1994. The Yankees presence in the area is undeniable.

That 9% of the population of Tampa Bay roots for the Yankees poses a problem for the Rays. It also poses a dilemma for Tampa politicians. These are the fans attending Yankees Spring Training, Tampa Yankees games, and supplementing Rays attendance in games versus the Yankees. Based on recent attendance trends, we can guess local Yankees fans are no longer making the drive to Tropicana Field as Yankees vs Rays attendance has dropped severely in recent years.

But that these fans buy Spring Training tickets hurts the assumption that Spring Training is only for tourists. These fans are spending their local dollars on the Yankees product. To believe that they are not is dishonest.

Even if the Yankees moved their Spring Training from Tampa (where they are contracted until 2046), there would still be Yankees fans in Tampa. There are Yankees fans everywhere. The Yankees are a global brand.

That the Rays have to compete in their own market against a global brand is a problem Major League Baseball has created and shows no intention of solving.

Rays fandom in Tampa Bay's top 25 zip codes

Over the past year, I have explored many Tampa Bay area zip codes. I have looked at these regions by population, determining how many baseball fans live in each and how many of these fans are teams of what team. Then I determined how far each of these fans are to each of Tampa Bay's baseball stadiums.

This post will be the first of several to combine zip code demographics and look for patterns and trends.

First, a list of the top 25 most populated zip codes in Tampa Bay per the 2010 census database on census.gov.

Of the top 25 most populated zip codes in Tampa Bay, 12 are in Hillsborough County, 5 are in Pinellas County, 5 are in Manatee County, and 3 are in Pasco County.

Now let's look at the amount of Rays fans per zip code by using data from Facebook/New York Times. This is calculated by assuming 50% of the total population is baseball fans. For example, if 50% of Zip Code 33511 are baseball fans, and 54% of those are Rays fans, then 14,041 people in zip code 33511 are Rays fans.

These 25 zip codes have a population of 926,581. The total amount of Rays fans in these zip codes is 234,516, or exactly 25% of the population. Now let's look at how far each of these Rays fan-heavy zip codes are from Tropicana Field.

These zip codes average 28 miles from Tropicana Field. Now let's plot Rays fans per distance. The following graph depicts the amount of Rays fans per distance.

A few observations:

• The two zip codes with the most Rays fans are over 35 miles to Tropicana Field.
• The four zip codes closest to Tropicana Field each have less than 10,000 Rays fans.
• Only four of the top 25 zip codes are within 20 miles of Tropicana Field.
• Almost half of the top 25 zip codes have between 8,000 and 10,000 Rays fans.
• 19 of the 25 most populated zip codes in the Tampa Bay area are over 25 miles from Tropicana Field.

This chart depicts the Rays's struggle. They don't have enough fans and those they have live too far away. This isn't old news. But it is good to put numbers to the situation.

This data would be interesting to compare to season ticket holders per zip code and credit card purchases per zip code. But that data is of course proprietary.

Adding Rays TV ratings to attendance

A few weeks ago, Maury Brown of Forbes.com published television ratings for all 29 US MLB teams. While other Rays writers have mentioned that Rays ratings are down and how that is not a good thing for the Rays fanbase's best argument.

But what about Total Interaction - the amount of people per game that are engaging the product, either in person or on television? Ideally, we would like to include people using the MLB app or following along on twitter, but those are difficult to ascertain. But let's combine attendance and ratings and see what we get.

First the final 2016 MLB attendance. You've probably seen this before. The Rays are on the bottom.

Let's now look at the same list adding TV viewers (TVs tuned in times 2.25 - viewers per household).

Due to their ratings and average viewers per household, the Rays jump from 29th to 20th among domestic markets. The Rays have the third biggest boost in interaction due to their ratings, trailing only Cleveland and Philadelphia.

Indicative of record, the bottom 12 teams on the above list, from LAA down, all had losing records in 2016. The top 11 teams on the above list, from CLE up, had winning records.

Due to the size of the Tampa Bay market, the Rays will never be at the bottom of ratings. If the team is good, their ratings will probably be better than average. As I mentioned in several posts, Tampa Bay is a small market, similar to Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Kansas City, and Milwaukee. When these teams are good, people watch.

And all cases besides Tampa Bay, when these teams are good, people go to games. Due to precedent then, we can boldly make the assumption that something else is in the way of Tampa Bay fans attending Major League Baseball.

Stadium location, perhaps?

Rays manager gets upset over Chi Chi Rodriguez's Yankees fandom

By last estimation, 50% of Tampa Bay residents are baseball fans. Of these 1.4 million people, roughly 60% root for the Rays, 20% root for the Yankees, and 20% root for the Red Sox, Braves, Cubs, Mets, and other teams. So it is no surprise when fandoms clash.

Unless the manager of the Rays gets involved.

A few years ago, Joe Maddon made a comment about Tropicana Field filling with Yankees fans to see Derek Jeter's final games at the Trop. Maddon was perturbed people were not rooting for the Rays. This frustration has continued with his successor, Kevin Cash.

According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Cash was upset over the weekend at PGA Golf legend Chi Chi Rodriguez for dissing the Rays and proclaiming his Yankees fandom at the Tampa Bay Sports Commission's annual Sneaker Soiree. With Cash in attendance, Rodriguez also stated the Rays have "no pitching".

With all due respect to Kevin Cash, he was in a no-win situation. First and foremost, the Tampa Sports Commission, sponsors of the event, run Steinbrenner Field. Supporting the Yankees is in their best interest.

Second, Chi Chi Rodriguez is a life long baseball fan who is from Puerto Rico and has been a part of the Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Course, Academy, and School in Clearwater since before the Rays were in existence. Based on demographics and geography, the chances of him liking the Yankees is pretty high.

This is what happens when a local area splits its loyalty between more than one team. It becomes acceptable for people disparage a team and for the local big league manager to have to defend himself and his team. Reminder: this doesn't happen in any other Major League city.

"My gosh Chi Chi, we're at a Tampa Bay event. C'mon, man." - Kevin Cash

Cash has lived in the Tampa Bay area long enough to know this area is divided. Until the area decides to put its loyalty and dollars behind only one baseball team, it will always be divided. Cash and the Rays will more than occasionally be second fiddle, especially on the Tampa side of the bridge.

Now we have to wonder if Cash will be involved with The First Tee Day promotion between the Rays and Chi Chi Rodriguez's golf facility. The promotion is July 31, 2016 as the Rays take on, who else, the Yankees.
