Blue Jays spring training extension challenged again in local media

Last week, friend of the site Noah Pransky dropped a bomb on Dunedin. Not literally of course, but in regards to the City of Dunedin's bid to extend the Toronto Blue Jays spring training, Noah might have nuked their efforts.

According to Pransky, Bonn Marketing, the "unofficial" economist of several spring training rebids, is not led by an economist at all, rather a tourism marketing professor. Pransky cites several fuzzy math conclusions and even some emails in which Bonn Marketing chief, Mark Bonn, urged the Blue Jays to beef up their numbers.

I've been opposed to the Dunedin extension on the grounds of market demand - I don't believe there is the potential for the 38% more seats and attendance the team wants to add for Blue Jays Spring Training. I think Dunedin is foolish to use the "if you build it, they will come" philosophy. As well, Dunedin is the smallest town to host Spring Training and Minor League Baseball in America. Their Florida State League attendance has been the worst in the league for years.

As well, any local money that goes to the Blue Jays is lost revenue or public dollars for the Tampa Bay Rays, the unsettled Major League team in the region.

It is another example of local politicians hedging their odds in case the Rays leave Tampa Bay.

There has to be a better use of the land Florida Auto Exchange Stadium sits on. And there has to be a better place for the Blue Jays, where they have more potential for fans and Blue Jays facilities.

Pransky's report was widely circulated and Bonn Marketing took a public relations hit. I would not be surprised to see Mark Bonn create or partner with another company in the near future, keeping his power but reducing his target to local media.

Public funding for stadiums will never be completely on the up-and-up. The work Pransky does and the work Bonn Marketing tries to make money on will always be a sly game of cat and mouse. But last week, Pransky scored a big win for public transparency.

Airbnb releases Spring Training month regional numbers

A few days ago, I published a post that showed how Spring Training attendance in Tampa Bay decline nearly 8%. But due to more local games, there were actually more spring training tickets sold overall in 2017 than there were in 2016.

Here are how games and total attendance compared to 2016:
  • Dunedin (Blue Jays): +2 games, +6,078 tickets sold
  • Clearwater (Phillies): +3 games, +15,455 tickets sold
  • Bradenton (Pirates): +2 games, +2,529 tickets sold
  • Tampa (Yankees): +0 games, -10,832 tickets sold

Capitalizing on the increased number of fans in the Tampa Bay are short-term, independent renters, particularly those using the Airbnb service.

Here is where I admit total ignorance to Airbnb. I've never used the service and have very little idea how it works or why it is a viable option. That said, according an Airbnb press release, 15,546 people used Airbnb in the Tampa Bay region during the six weeks of Spring Training. That's 2,591 per week.

Here are the stats Airbnb shared via press release (via the Tampa Bay Times):
TAMPA -- Home to New York Yankees

During Spring Training:

Airbnb Guests: 9,605 guest arrivals
Guest Origin: New York was #1 origin state to Tampa
Overall Spike: 32% spike in guests compared to previous 5 week stretch
Home State Spike: 33% spike in New York guests compared to previous 6 week stretch
Host Income: Tampa hosts earned $1.53 million in supplemental income by sharing their homes
Active Hosts: About 800 Airbnb hosts in Tampa

CLEARWATER -- Home to Philadelphia Phillies

During Spring Training:

Airbnb Guests: 3,447 guest arrivals
Overall Spike: 62% spike in guests compared to previous 5 week stretch
Guest Origin: Pennsylvania was #1 origin state to Clearwater
Home State Spike: 153% spike in Pennsylvania guests compared to previous 5 week stretch
Host Income: Clearwater hosts earned $820,000 in supplemental income by sharing their homes
Active Hosts: About 300 Airbnb hosts in Clearwater

DUNEDIN -- Home to Toronto Blue Jays

During Spring Training:

Airbnb Guests: 800 guest arrivals
Overall Spike: 105 percent spike in guests compared to previous 5-week stretch
Guest Origin: Ontario was No. 1 origin state/province (American or Canadian) to Dunedin
Home State Spike: 1,860 percent spike in Ontario guests compared to previous 5-week stretch
Host Income: Dunedin hosts earned $263,000 in supplemental income by sharing their homes
Active Hosts: About 100 Airbnb hosts in Dunedin

BRADENTON -- Home to Pittsburgh Pirates

During Spring Training:

Airbnb Guests: 1,694 guest arrivals
Overall Spike: 45% spike in guests compared to previous 5 week stretch
Guest Origin: Pennsylvania was #1 origin state to Bradenton
Home State Spike: 194% spike in Pennsylvania guests compared to previous 5 week stretch
Host Income: Bradenton hosts earned $380,000 in supplemental income by sharing their homes
Active Hosts: About 300 Airbnb hosts in Bradenton

If every increased guest was a baseball fan and booked rooms specifically to visit spring training location, here is the real Tampa Bay area max gain (assuming 3 games a week):
  • Tampa: 512 a week = approximately 170 per game
  • Clearwater: 427 a week = approximately 142 per game
  • Dunedin: 80 a week = approximately 26 per game
  • Bradenton: 152 per week = approximately 50 per game
This data shows us two things:
  1. We need to assume some of the tourists arriving to see the Blue Jays in Dunedin stayed in Clearwater.
  2. Yankees spring training attendance is not as reliant on tourism as many assume. Estimates have Yankees Spring Training at 50% tourists and 50% local or in-state. The largest spring training stadium in the biggest market in the Grapefruit League only has 28 fans more per game than Clearwater.
  3. Tampa and Clearwater have a huge impact on Grapefruit League attendance.

I would be curious to compare Airbnb usage in 2017 to 2016 and earlier. While spring training attendance declined, did Airbnb usage increase? If so, what does that mean for hotel arguments that spring training is good for the local economy?

Spring training may still have the same impact on local economies through Airbnb, but it is possible official hotels are being used less. That might mean less hotels are needed.

Then again, we are only talking about approximately 2% of total regional spring training attendance. Airbnb usage is a curious trivia point, but just that, a trivia point in the larger economic picture.

Tampa Bay area Spring Training attendance declines 3rd year in a row

Every year, Florida tourism websites and local sports media glam up spring training attendance. They tout the overall numbers as if they were dipped in gold and wrapped in a beautiful ribbon.

"Spring Training attendance is high! Tourism is fine!", the headlines read.

"Visitors love the Grapefruit League! We make so much in hotel taxes and fees!", the articles proclaim.

But all is not perfect in the Grapefruit League, especially with Spring Training in Tampa Bay.

As several other writers have been discussing recently, money invested in stadiums is increasing, yet Spring Training attendance is decreasing.

Before this season, the Yankees made major tax-payer funded upgrades to Steinbrenner Field, the Pirates added a new scoreboard to
McKechnie StadiumLECOM Field, and the Blue Jays began negotiating for public money to rebuild their stadium. Yet in all three areas, Spring Training attendance declined.

Across Tampa Bay, from Dunedin to Bradenton, Clearwater to Tampa, Spring Training attendance in Tampa Bay declined nearly 8%.

The decline in 2017 follows a 2% decline in 2016 and a 1% in 2015. Tampa Bay Spring Training average attendance in 2017 was only slightly better than 2009's average attendance.

After 4 years of increases from 2007 to 2010, then no change in 2011, per game attendance has decreased 4 of last 6 years.

As a reminder before I go further, since 2008, there have been four teams training in the Tampa Bay area: the Yankees (Tampa), Blue Jays (Dunedin), Phillies (Clearwater), and Pirates (Bradenton).

The current capacities for each team’s stadium are as follows:
  • Steinbrenner Field (Yankees): 11,000
  • Bright House Field (Phillies): 8,500
  • LECOM Field (Pirates): 8,500
  • Florida Auto Exchange Stadium (Blue Jays): 5,521

Now that we have reiterated the basis as well as where we stand, let's look at each team individually, isolate some patterns, and look at factors why Spring Training attendance in Tampa Bay has been on the decline.

The following graph shows the Tampa Bay area per game average as well as breaks out individual team per game attendance.

In 2017, every team in the Tampa Bay area saw a decreases in per game Spring Training attendance.
  • Blue Jays: -5.2%
  • Phillies: -5.3%
  • Yankees: -6.8%
  • Pirates: -9.6%
The most agreed upon theory as to why Spring Training attendance decreased is the World Baseball Classic. The event took many of baseball's best stars from their training camps and forced fans to choose where to spend their money and time: on the remaining exhibition players or on national teams playing in a highly competitive tournament across the world.

Earlier this spring, friend of the site William Juliano wrote about the effect of the World Baseball Classic on attendance. According to Juliano,
Since the inaugural WBC in 2006, spring training attendance has taken a hit in each year that the tournament has been played. However, the decline has only been temporary. In the year following the WBC, attendance levels have immediately snapped back and continued their gradual ascent.
Scheduling may have affected Spring Training attendance in Tampa Bay. According to Brady Fredrickson of the Lakeland Ledger, early starts to the schedule throw off tourists' travel plans, especially when Spring Training occurs before regional Spring Breaks. This scheduling change in 2017 was a result of the World Baseball Classic.
The Grapefruit League season started Feb. 24 this year, nearly a week earlier than the March 4 start in 2016. That change was made because of the 2017 World Baseball Classic, which was played from March 6 to 22.

Not disagreeing with either of these theories.I have a little more data to collect before I can talk with authority about these subjects.

In Tampa Bay, however, the World Baseball Classic has had varying effects. Almost to the point where other factors play an equal or a bigger role in spring training attendance. I'll discuss these factors below as I analyze each Tampa Bay area spring training team's attendance trends since 2005.

Blue Jays spring training attendance since 2005:

In 2017, the Blue Jays per game average was similar to the average in 2015 and 2013. The Jays wiped out their gain from 2016. The Jays did not suffer from a WBC decline in 2013 as they average increased from 2012 to 2013. Jays spring attendance did decline in 2006 and 2009, however.

We might be able to conclude the 2007 increase was both because of wins the year prior and post-WBC bounce. We might also conclude the small decrease in 2014 was due to a disappointing 2013 regular season. On the other hand, the Jays lost more games in 2009 than in 2008, but they gained in Spring Training attendance, possibly due to a post-WBC bump. But in 2011, the Jays won more the year before, but attendance declined.

The Jays may be a perfect example of why I need to learn regression models.

Phillies spring training attendance since 2005:

In 2017, the Phillies attendance continued to drop. Phillies spring attendance has decreased five years in a row and their per game attendance has decreased 26% since 2012. The best explanation to this would be the Phillies’ fall from NL East prominence.

Phillies spring training attendance increased sharply following the World Baseball Classic in 2006. From 2007 to 2012, the Phillies averaged 95 wins a season and made the World Series twice, winning the championship in 2008. Following a decline in wins from 2012 to 2013, Phillies spring training attendance began to decrease.

It is difficult to correlate the World Baseball Classic to the Phillies spring attendance decline in 2017. The decline could have been due to the Phillies second division status, or it could have been enhanced by the WBC.

Yankees spring training attendance since 2005:

In 2017, the Yankees had their lowest per game attendance in at least 12 years. Since 2011, Yankees per game attendance has dropped 14%.

As I mentioned last year, we don't see the variance in attendance with the Yankees we see with other teams.Nor did Yankees attendance have much fluctuation during previous World Baseball Classics. We can estimate two reasons for this:
  1. The Yankees are one of the most popular teams in Florida. They do not rely on tourism as much as other regional Spring Training teams.
  2. From 2005 to 2013, the Yankees were one of the best teams in the Majors. They were continuously playoff contenders and even won the World Series in 2009. The post-World Series bump possibly superseded the WBC decline.

Pirates spring training attendance since 2005:

The good news is the Pirates set a record for most fans attending spring training games in Bradenton. The bad news is average attendance per game was down for the third year in a row.

The Pirates saw no effect from the World Baseball Classic in 2006, attendance dropped considerably in 2009, and declined in 2017. While the Pirates spring attendance increased sharply in 2013 and 2014, attendance in 2017 was back to 2013 level.

The Pirates also won 20 games less in 2017 than they did in 2016, their first sub-.500 season in three years. Again, I need to learn regression.

Conclusion:

As I wrote in 2016: "While most media and politicians are quick to praise Spring Training attendance, an exploration into the numbers shows the state and the local area's totals decreased."

The World Baseball Classic and early season scheduling may have had a significant effect on Tampa Bay area spring training attendance. But the decline in talent and wins by the Yankees and Phillies have lead to decreased interest in those teams' respective spring trainings. As they are the biggest stadiums and spring fanbases in the Tampa Bay area, they weigh heavy on the region's overall attendance.

The Pirates and Blue Jays have smaller spring ballparks but also saw 2017 declines. Blue Jays attendance is possibly tied closer to the World Baseball Classic than the Pirates. The allure and excitement of new talent and a contending team definitely helped Pirates attendance as did additions to McKechnie Field. If the Pirates and Blue Jays contend and challenge for a pennant or a World Series, spring attendance should pick up considerably.

There are a lot of factors behind spring training attendance. Maybe more than regional regular season attendance. Spring training attendance relies on a mix of local residents, regional fans, retirees, and tourists. Fans are attracted to teams that win the year prior and teams with star power.

Spring Training in Tampa Bay remains big business, but maybe its not as big as most media and politicians make it out to be. Maybe we have reached Peak Spring Training. Perhaps next year, Spring Training attendance will skyrocket as there will be no World Baseball Classic. Maybe a team that trains regionally will win the World Series and fans will flock to the area to see pre-season exhibitions.

Whatever the case, these trends should be further analyzed before any additional public money is spent on spring training facilities.

Tampa Bay Rays Attendance During Tampa Bay Lightning Games 2007-2017

With the end of the 2016-2017 Tampa Bay Lightning season, it's time to take another look at days both the Lightning and the Tampa Bay Rays played home games. This season, the Lightning did not make the NHL playoffs, although they made a challenge with a late season push. Given the Lightning exclusion from the playoffs, 2017 saw the least amount of coinciding games since 2013.

The following chart depicts all 29 dates since 2007 that the Rays have played on the same day as the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Highlighted boxes = Lightning playoff games.
D/N = Day or Night game.
Rays Avg Annual Attendance/Day” is the Rays average attendance on that day during that year (for example: 19,452 is the Friday average attendance during 2007).
% Difference” is the percentage difference between the Rays attendance during that particular game and the Rays average attendance on that day for the year.

In 2017, the Rays and Lightning played on the same day twice - both Sundays. The first coinciding date was the Rays Opening Day on April 2nd. Since the Rays have sold out 12 consecutive Opening Days, there is no reason to think Lightning attendance had any effect on Rays ticket demand. The second coinciding date was April 9th, when the Lightning had their final home game in the evening and the Rays played their 7th game of the season during the day.

Although we don't have Rays daily averages yet, we can compared the Rays April 9th attendance to their 2016 Sunday average. In 2016, the Rays averaged 18,996 to Sunday games. Of their 13 Sunday games in 2016, an attendance of 15,341 would have ranked near the bottom.

Another interesting stat from this chart is that the Lightning have sold out the last 3 non-playoff games played on the same day as Rays games. Of course, we would expect them to sell-out playoff games, but selling out non-playoff games is an indication of high ticket demand and an excited and robust fanbase.

In 2017, Rays Opening Day also coincided with a Lightning game for the first time since 2010. This also happened in 2007. 2017 was first time both teams sold out.

To the Rays advantage this year, local fans won't be spending their money or time on the Lightning for the remainder of the 2017 baseball season. The last time the Lightning failed to make the playoffs was the 2012-2013 season. In 2013, the Rays drew 1.5 million fans. Since the Lightning began their most recent playoff streak, Rays average attendance has been 1.2 million.

Can we attribute the Rays 300,000 fans per year decrease on the Lightning making the playoffs? Probably not. But it may be a factor. A factor that the Rays will not face this season.

As I wrote last year,
Some people will always choose the Rays over the Lightning, just as some people will always choose the Lightning over the Rays. Some will stay home and watch both. Some people don't care about either. But we have to consider the Tampa Bay population as the majority of the potential attendance for both events. Hearts, minds, and dollars are trying to be won by both teams.

For the Rays the opportunity now exists to get casual fans to spend their money and time in both ticket sales and TV ratings on Major League Baseball where they might have spent either or both on the NHL playoffs.

Here are a few ideas the Rays could do to capitalize on Lightning fandom this spring:
  • get Lightning players to throw out the first pitch.
  • give Lightning season ticket holders a discount on Rays tickets until June
  • recognize Lightning parking passes at Tropicana Field until the NHL playoffs end.
  • organize events in downtown Tampa with Raymond and the Lightning mascot to push tickets to people working in Tampa
  • rent a bus to go from Amalie Arena to Tropicana Field before a weekend game

Lightning fans have money in their pockets they would be spending on the NHL playoffs had the Lightning made it. This money is now the Rays to win.

Stadium Wars by Shooter and the Stache

We spend hours and hours online, watching, reading, and generally wasting time. We are amusing ourselves, but not fully. So we keep looking something great. Something that will make other searches irrelevant.

A few days ago, I found such a nugget.

From Tampa Bay area animators Shooter and the Stache comes "Stadium Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Ace". Star Wars meets the Tampa Bay Rays. Amazing.

CNN reporter lies about Rays attendance

For the last few months, I have capitalized on the trend of "fake news" and created some levity among my twitter followers by calling uninformed tweets about the Rays and Rays fans "#fakeRaysNews". It's been a fun little hobby and no one has gotten too upset about it.

On opening day, however, I actually did share the woe of President Trump when I found a CNN reporter tweeting fake news about the Rays. In the opening innings of the opening day game versus the Yankees, CNN Washington DC correspondent Phil Mattingly tweeted this:

The game was a sell-out. Opening Day at Tropicana Field drew 31,042 fans. One can quibble about who which fan was there to see, the Rays or the Yankees, but the bottom line is, they were there.

Mattingly's tweet was uncalled for and intended to mislead. It is a lie. It is untruthful and coming from a respected media source, it is fake news.

It is one thing when a Red Sox fan or an Orioles fan tweets trash talk about the Rays. But to see an uncalled for comment from a CNN reporter is unusual. I am not sure Mattingly's baseball preference, but he shouldn't talk trash about other teams on his professional twitter account.
