Despite Poor Record, Clearwater Threshers Lead in Attendance

Last week, Dayn Perry of CBS Sports wrote an article about the struggles of this year's Clearwater Threshers. Perry cites the team's poor pitching and runs given up above runs scored (run differential) has markers of a struggling team.

Despite their poor performance on the field, the Threshers are having a stellar year in the stands. They currently lead the Florida State League in attendance at 2,845 fans per game, 300 more than the 2nd place Daytona Cubs.

Looking at the Threshers' attendance trends, we can see the main driver for Threshers attendance is promotions. Various promotions throughout the season have greatly boosted the Threshers attendance. Among the highlights through August 2, 2014:
  • 4,449 fans per game for any game ending with a fireworks display.
  • 3,584 fans per game for $1 Tuesday, where admission is $1 as well as $1 beer, drinks, and food.
  • 3,560 fans per game for post-game concerts that have included Coolio, Slick Rick, and Jaime Lynn Spears.

Not bad for team on a pace to lose 100 games. This further proves attendance in the minor leagues is not usually linked to on-field performance.
